Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner are demanding the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate Michael D. Cohen for allegedly making false statements to Congress. The lawmakers expressed their concerns in a letter co-led by Stefanik and Turner, urging Attorney General Merrick Garland to take action.
Stefanik criticized the Biden Administration, accusing them of obstructing the investigation, stating, “The Biden Administration’s attempts to stonewall this investigation is yet another example of Biden’s lawfare against President Trump.” Turner also weighed in on the matter, highlighting Cohen's lack of credibility by stating, “Michael Cohen has no credibility. He is an admitted liar.”
In their letter to the DOJ, the lawmakers emphasized the lack of response from the Biden Justice Department regarding the criminal referral sent in November. They criticized the department for not taking action against Cohen, despite his admission of lying under oath before Congress. The lawmakers pointed out a perceived double standard in the DOJ's actions, comparing the treatment of Cohen to that of former Trump senior presidential advisors who were prosecuted for different offenses.
The letter raised concerns about potential politicization of the DOJ, with the lawmakers alleging that the department was being used to protect certain individuals and harm political opponents. The lawmakers suggested that the DOJ's inaction regarding Cohen's false statements was a deliberate effort to shield him, especially as he was expected to testify against former President Trump in New York.
